Experience

Journal of Medical Insight (jomi.com) -Senior Partner Wayne State University - Department of Neurosurgery -Research Assistant Since high school I have had an affinity for tutoring, but back then it involved helping my peers understand some of the material we learned together. When I started undergrad, I was tutoring a few high school students for a part-time job, and this continued until graduation. I am now in my final semester of medical school with some time to continue doing what I enjoy, and that's teaching. My process is fairly simple. I like to start with using the student's study material to determine their understanding of what they need to learn. Then, with a couple of questions relating to the fundamental concepts underlying that material, we determine our starting point. Often it is this constellation of gaps in knowledge that hinder progress in a subject matter. However, this is only half the battle. Just as important, and often lacking in a classroom setting, is teaching how to learn. Most of my students have been high school students studying mathematics and sciences. I have also had adults who need review in math or science, students taking the SAT, and can help with other college entrance exams as well. The diversity of students I've had range from those who are performing above average who would like to elevate their understanding, to those who are struggling to attain acceptable grades, with our without learning disabilities (such as ADHD). For the first lesson I charge for 1 hour, even if it takes longer (up to 2 hours). I do this because I like to assess my student's understanding of the subject matter, and get an idea of their learning style and pace.
