Private tutor in Toronto, Canada

Education

I am a first-year PhD student at the University of Toronto in the experimental physical chemistry stream. I am currently taking course work in laser spectroscopy and photophysics, physical organic chemistry and quantum mechanics. I graduated with my Bachelors of Science with Honors in Chemistry from Western Washington University, located in Bellingham, WA, USA, in June of 2019 with a cumulative GPA of 3.89/4.0.

Experience

I have worked as a tutor during my undergraduate and have over 200 hours of experience of one-on-one student tutoring in 1st year (general) chemistry, 2nd year organic chemistry, as well as 1st year physics and calculus, all of which are soft equivalents to AP/IB courses of the same subject matter. I also have experience tutoring Algebra I & II and Pre-Calculus, though with less experience to the former. Through my former tutoring occupation, I have received training in a "growth mindset" approach towards tutoring students that focuses on teaching students strategies for overcoming barriers in their studies rather than teaching material directly through the "College Reading & Learning Association" (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program (Level 1). My approach to tutoring is to model problem solving strategies that will teach students skills how to identify their strengths weaknesses when trying to understand material so that they will learn how to study more efficiently for any subject they desire. As consequence, since my approach is focused more so on skill building rather than material delivery, I expect students to be open-minded towards implementing the study skills I provide them to attempt to access resources outside myself to learn material and to use the tutoring time to reflect on what they've learned, and identify areas that they're struggling to understand.

Hobbies

I have recently relocated from Washington State to Toronto for graduate school, but as I've been told, I still maintain the "laid back" personality of a typical west-coaster. In my off-time, you can find me taking a drop-in dance class, making jokes with friends, or just hanging out with my cat. As a student myself, I try to find a balance of taking my studies seriously with the goal of being able to have an appreciation for the material I'm learning and accomplishing the task-at-hand of being successful in my coursework. Finding this balance isn't easy, and it had certainly taken me a better part of my life to begin to find it, but I've found the balance has increased my overall appreciation for lifelong learning which I hope to pass onto the student that I tutor.
