Experience
I taught for two years through the Ryerson University tutoring program. The university requires 3.7 in the subjects taught. I really enjoyed the experience which allowed me to do something rewarding; unlike the other part time jobs that are commonly available to university students.I am considering becoming a teacher as a profession. A bachelor of education is a real possibility in the next year and tutoring would provide me with valuable teaching experience. In terms of professional experience I worked for statistics Canada during the 2012 census in a managerial position. For my degree thesis I produced a theoretical paper comparing the effects of competition and patents on the the utility of consumers and producers. I am very patient and don't have a problem focusing my attention on something simple for hours. I like to teach while putting myself in the shoes of the student, because I believe that anyone can learn anything. Most students, from my experience, that have problems learning a certain topic lack the will to do so because of the often huge disconnect between the topic and the immediate reality of the student. Some topics can get very abstract like measuring the likelihood of a measurement system correctly measuring the likelihood of something not being true in statistics. So often, the best approach seems to be making the topic more relevant by using practical examples or including the student's interests in the examples. In other cases it might just be a lack of some fundamental knowledge that school teachers might not be covering. Either way I make sure that my students will succeed and understand the target topics. I am comfortable teaching all of the above subjects at the high school level as well as economics, finance and statistics at the university level. I am usually available any time except Wednesday and Thursday mornings. On Fridays I am available after 1600.
