Experience

Jess Taylor is the host and founder of The Emerging Writers Reading Series. She writes poems, stories, novels, and songs. She co-edited Echolocation Magazine and blogs for The Puritan’s Town Crier. Her work has been published in Little Brother, Little Fiction, Great Lakes Review, Emerge Literary Journal, and more, and she recently had a chapbook, And Then Everyone, released by Picture Window Press. Jess is a graduate of The University of Toronto’s English in the Field of Creative Writing Master’s Program. Recently, Jess was named a fiction finalist for a 2013 National Magazine Award in Fiction and named “one of the best alt-lit reads coming out of Canada” by Dazed and Confused Magazine. Jess has been tutoring since 2009, both with agencies and privately. She has experience teaching ESL students and multiple age groups. Most recently, Jess started teaching College English (analytical English and essay writing) as a professor at Seneca College’s Jane Campus. Previously, Jess worked at the University of Toronto as a teaching assistant for ENG 100: Effective Writing, as a tutorial leader for ENG 287: The Digital Text, and as a writing instructor for Rotman School of Commerce’s writing initiative for students in RSM 100: Introduction to Management. Jess has experience preparing students for the English, Reading, and Essay Writing portions of the SAT, the Language portion of SSAT, EQAO, and Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. Jess is also available for short-term sessions for help on a specific assignment. In the past, Jess has helped students plan and follow-through on assignments and helped fine-tune Master's theses and multiple-page PhD assignments. Since Jess has a background in many subject areas, she is the ideal tutor for students who need help with this type of work. She has worked with students in Health, Social Services, Information Technology, Business, Science and Technology Studies, as well as English. Jess combines her passion for the written language with her professional and educational experience in the field, ready to pass along her knowledge to you or your child!
