Experience
I am a third year medical student at University of Toronto with a passion for sharing knowledge and teaching. I offer tutoring in the Verbal Reasoning/CARS section of the MCAT as well as consulting for medical school applications. Since 2011, I have been involved with teaching in many forms from being a private tutor for high school and university students in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and writing all the way to a private piano teacher preparing students for Royal Conservatory Grade 10 piano examinations. My ultimate goal is to become a clinician educator and promote health and medical education at all levels, from high school all the way to residency and fellowship. I am very familiar with what it takes for success in the medical school admissions process. I scored in the 97th percentile on the MCAT and was offered admission at University of Toronto, University of Western Ontario, and Dalhousie University. I can help you with every step of the process, including profile-building and strategizing, essay/personal statement writing, and interview skills (MMI, panel, MPI). Whether you are in the first years of undergrad contemplating medical school off in the future, or you are currently preparing applications, or if you have been unsuccessful and are not sure how to proceed, I can help you with every step of the process to build the strongest and most competitive application that you can build. How I tutor: 1. Identify gaps. I'll listen and work closely with you to identify areas that you wish to improve or weak areas that you might not be aware of yet. Teaching is a two-way street! 2. Set goals. Once we figure out what things you'd like to work on, we'll next set goals for us to meet and a time-frame to achieve those goals. These will be reasonable goals, but I also do my best to push my students to reach their full potential. 3. Develop proficiency. Each session we will focus on meeting the goal that we set for ourselves that week and develop proficiency in that area. I like to teach by asking questions and ensure the student can grasp the underlying concept and understand at an intuitive and natural level, rather than promoting rote memorization. After I illustrate the underlying principles we will then move on to practical examples and learning by doing. 4. Build independence. Every session is a step toward building independence of thought and ability in the student. My ultimate goal is to help you reach the point where you no longer need me and can confidently approach the subject without my help. My rate is $40/hour. If you feel the first session was not a good fit for you, there is no charge! It is important to me to make sure students feel as comfortable as possible and that the sessions are meaningful and productive. I typically tutor students close to the downtown U of T campus near Queen's Park TTC Station.
