Ben M.

Private tutor in Toronto, Canada

Education

I took courses at the University of Toronto toward an English and Sociology degree, and am now enrolled at Seneca College in the Computer Programming and Analysis program. I currently hold a 4.0 GPA.

Experience

As a tutor, I focus on overlying concepts and real-world skills. My students enjoy my use of creative analogies and practical examples, and I've received nothing but positive feedback. I take a transformational approach to learning, in that I focus on the unique needs of each and every student and tailor my lessons accordingly to match their learning style and knowledge level. I have a lot of experience with tutoring and editing essays and other documents for friends and clients. I have also taught a class of children. I also taught a Korean-Canadian gentleman for a few weeks and he was finally able to pass the English proficiency test required of him to legally work in Canada.

Hobbies

Below are two main hobbies of mine. Other hobbies and interests can be found at the bottom. Writing: -articles, blogging, essays, poems, quotes -working towards becoming an author -I also enjoy writing characters with detailed information and back-stories, even if they don't yet belong to a particular story of mine -I spend a chunk of time each week tutoring English in some way and helping clients and close friends with essays and other projects Go / 围棋 / 圍棋 /囲碁 / 바둑: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_%28game%29 Go is an amazingly profound and enjoyable game with an extensive history. It is mentally cultivating and philosophically evocative. Students of the game develop practical virtues and discipline such as reasoning, balance (of many things, such as greed control, give-and-take), logic, attention to detail, large-scale strategy, imaginative ability (reading future moves, constructing plans), flexibility (adjusting to conflict, trading, sacrifice, constantly forming entirely new plans), memorization (mostly optional) etc. I have a great deal of experience teaching this game, and I am a 6th dan ranked player. Information can be found here: http://bktutoring.net/baduk and here: http://senseis.xmp.net/?BenMantle Other Hobbies/Interests: Computer programming, pedagogy, design, music and karaoke, East Asian food, culture and languages (I can speak Japanese and I'm currently learning Cantonese), exercise
