Education

Master of Arts, History, McMaster University. I maintained an A average throughout my coursework and in my thesis which studies the politics of the Huguenot movement in the French Religious wars in the late 16th Century. Honours Bachelor's Degree of Arts, History, University of Toronto. I graduated with Distinction and completed an Independent Research Study on the monarchy of Francis I of France. I have taken courses on history around the world with a focus on Early Modern European History. This reaches from the Renaissance and Reformation to the Napoleonic Wars and includes the Age of Discovery and the birth of European colonial empires. Other areas I have studied include Caribbean, South Asian, East Asian, Canadian, and American History.

Experience

I am a tutor with the On Your Mark tutoring program which helps students from disadvantaged groups in Toronto get academic help. I was also a TA during my Master's degree and taught courses in history. I love to teach, particularly one on one. To help students work through tough problems or assignments is very rewarding to me. I am an attentive and enthusiastic teacher and hope to encourage such enthusiasm in my students' learning. I am also an experienced essay editor. Throughout my studies I edited papers for my friends, and helped with several of their successful applications to grad programs. I have also been hired to edit a Ph. D. for format and citations. I have a close attention to detail and can help writers better express their ideas and cut down on unnecessary wordiness.

Hobbies

I am an avid musician. I play the bass and guitar and I sing. I find music to be a very useful tool in tutoring which can help students to memorize and internalize information. I like many styles from Jazz to Classical, but also Prog Rock and Folk. My favourite books are historical non-fiction and high fantasy, though anything with detailed descriptions of far-off regions or societies can interest me. Such books include the works of Susanna Clarke, J. R. R. Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, G. R. R. Martin, and J. K. Rowling. I also love to cook. I like to improvise recipes from simple ingredients. I much prefer to cook something new than follow someone else's recipe.
